I built a table! Using lumber, cedar planks, and a gorgeous Minwax cherry oak stain (to match my grandmother's hutch), this table is a custom size to sit as many people as possible in our dining room.
Here's a visual story of how I went from a napkin sketch to a real life table:
(I later swapped out the legs for wider ones. My husband chose the ones you see pictured above, and, wanting him to feel he had a say in some of the decision-making, (and also because I love him), I went with them. They were ok, but we both prefer the thicker, butcher block ones we have now.)
